What is rosacea?

Rosacea is very common, affecting one in 20 Americans. Rosacea typically appears on your face. At first, it might look like a red, flushed appearance around your nose and cheeks, and you’ll notice your blood vessels seem bigger and more visible. In time, rosacea can spread to your forehead, ears, chest, and back.

Rosacea is routinely mistaken for other conditions, such as eczema, acne, an allergic reaction, or other skin problems. If left untreated, rosacea gets worse. It’s best to call Âme Medical Spa right away if you think there’s a chance you have rosacea.

What are the symptoms of rosacea?

There are four types of rosacea, each with certain symptoms:

Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea: Causes visible blood vessels, redness, and a flushed appearance
Papulopustular rosacea: Creates acne-like breakouts, oily skin, redness, and raised skin patches called plaques
Phymatous rosacea: Produces oily, thick, and bumpy skin, particularly on your nose
Ocular rosacea: Makes your eyes dry, red, and irritated. Your lids may swell, and you might have a sty-like lump

You might notice your nose looks bigger, or bulbous. This effect sometimes happens with rosacea. It’s called rhinophyma and happens more often to men than women.

How is rosacea treated?

Treating rosacea typically begins by identifying factors that make your condition worse, causing flare-ups. Some common triggers are spicy foods, alcohol, hot or cold temperatures, and the sun. Avoiding your triggers can prevent flare-ups and help you to enjoy clearer skin. In addition, prescription creams and gels can help reduce redness.

However, you may find these options ineffective in providing the clearer skin you desire. If this is the case, your provider at Âme Medical Spa may recommend laser therapy.

How does laser therapy treat rosacea?

Advanced laser treatment with the Cynosure Icon reduces the red, flushed appearance of rosacea, revealing smoother, healthier skin. Laser treatment targets unwanted vessels in your skin. By delivering specialized pulses of light energy, the treatment causes vessels to gradually disappear through your body’s natural healing process. Treatment typically takes only 15-30 minutes. You may need multiple treatments to see the best results.

If you’d like to explore your options for smoother, healthy skin, call Âme Medical Spa today and find out about the treatment options that are right for you.
